Museum Night
14 July
The popular Museum Night event, where nearby museums extend their hours and open up their doors for free, comes to the V&A Waterfront. Participating museums include the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa at the Scheryn Pavilion, Chavonnes Battery Museum, Iziko Maritime Centre, the Robben Island Jetty Museum, the Cape Town Diamond Museum, the Golf Hall of Fame, and the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum. You can expect a night of activations, performances, food and other experiences designed to guide you through historical and culturally significant spaces and exhibitions. Long story short? It’s fun. It’s free. It’s bursting with culture credits. Count us in.
Watershed Creative Exchange
30 June, 14 July, 25 August
Come and enjoy a fun- filled series of night markets at the Watershed where you can enjoy (amongst other things) a talent-sharing session where participants teach one another about their specific skillset (it’s like Speed Dating, but with creative skills). You can also take part in “Meet the Maker” tours on the evening, where you will get to… well… meet the makers behind some of the craft and design you may have seen at the Watershed. On top of all that, there will also be loads to eat and drink, so these are nights not to be missed.
The Amphitheatre at the V&A Waterfront will be playing host to a 3-act music and dance performance headlined by Emo Adams and Derek Plaaitjies, ably supported by the likes of the Rainbow Academy and the UCT Big Band.
Date: 16 June | Time: 11:00 – 13:00 | Venue: V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre | Cost: Free
Mandela Day Celebrations
18 July
Your chance to give back on Mandela Day by buying a hand crafted bottle designed by the Rainbow Academy Arts & Crafts. Buying a bottle helps support the academy’s initiative AND helps brighten up your office or home space, so let’s call this a “Win / win”. In addition, you can participate at the craft station and spend your 67 minutes building your very own bottle.
Kids Holiday Programme
25 June – 16 July
Yes, school holidays are as sure as winter, and your kids are going to need to be entertained. The V&A has pulled out all stops with a pretty wide variety of activities to keep your kids busy. From a Pumptrack (a fun 50 metre continuous track for them to cycle up and down- kids love that), honing their ball skills with our Rugby Tots sessions, to stimulating their minds with our Innovation Stations, you’ll quickly be their favourite parent / uncle / aunt / minder this Winter.
25 June – 17 July
What’s a “Pumptrack”? Glad you asked, it’s fifty metres of PURE FUN and it’s what children of all ages will encounter at the new temporary pumptrack between Saturday, 25 June and Sunday, 17 July this winter. It’s essentially a continuous track where the rider uses an up and down ‘pumping’ motion to propel the bicycle/scooter forward instead of pedalling, providing the perfect tool to improve balance, learn skills and improve confidence on a bike.
Dates: 25 June – 17 July | Times: 10h30 – 15h30 | Venue: Quays Square (in front of the African Trading Port)
Cost: Free
28 June – 10 July
Think your offspring might be a creative genius? Why not get them involved in some high-energy creative and playful fun at the Innovation Station, scheduled daily over the holiday period? Parents can bring their little ones to the V&A Waterfront Centre Court for workshops that focus on encouraging exploration and stimulating children’s imaginations and problem-solving skills as they tumble around in a safe but fun environment.
Overseen by four engaging facilitators, this year’s workshop theme is ‘recycling’ and seeks to instil a positive, environmental appreciation message in young children’s minds. The daily workshops will focus on the processes of designing, making, prototyping and playing with recyclable materials, and cost R20 per child per day. No bookings are required and entry can be paid for on arrival.
Please note:
Depending on demand at the time, play time at the Innovation Station may be limited to one hour per child.
Dates: 28 June – 10 July | Times: 11h00 – 18h00 | Venue: Centre Court inside Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre | Cost: R20 per child
4-8 July, 11-15 July
If you suspect that you may have a future Springbok on your hands, bring them along to a Rugbytots Holiday Club. The sessions use rugby-specific skills to develop your child’s physical, psychological, and social attributes, as well as getting them to run with the ball, find space, kick, catch, score a try, and much more.
Two Holiday Clubs will run this winter, with the first scheduled for 4 to 8 July and the second from 11 to 15 July. Each Holiday Club will have three classes per day, organised by age group. Sessions have been organised for children aged 2 to 3, 3 to 5, and 5 to 7 years, and will take place on the Croquet Lawn at the V&A Waterfront at a cost of R300 (for one weeks’ worth of sessions) or R550 (for two weeks’ sessions) per child. Pre-booking is essential: www.rugbytots.co.za
