Yes, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is beautiful. Yes, you’ll probably take approximately 30 photos at the Boomslang. And yes, you’ll certainly stop to photograph the mountain views a few times.
But there’s a lot more to Kirstenbosch than the Instagram-worthy moments.
Behind the garden and scenic walkways is a place dedicated to South Africa’s indigenous plants, biodiversity, research and conservation. It’s also a place where locals come to picnic, hikers begin mountain walks, families spend Sunday afternoons, and visitors discover a completely different side of Cape Town.
So, if you’re planning a visit, here’s what to know before you go:
Things to Do at Kirstenbosch
One of the best things about Kirstenbosch is that you can make your visit as relaxed or adventurous as you like.
You can wander through the gardens, explore indigenous plant collections, look out for birds and sculptures, enjoy a picnic or stop for something to eat. Or, if you’re feeling more energetic, you can head towards the mountain trails. The garden covers 200 hectares, including cultivated gardens and natural areas of forest and fynbos on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.
Don’t Miss the Boomslang
The Boomslang Tree Canopy Walkway is probably the most recognisable Kirstenbosch experience. The 130-metre steel-and-timber walkway winds through the Arboretum before rising above the trees. Once you’ve done the obligatory photos, take some time to explore the surrounding Arboretum and other collections, including the Protea Garden and African Medicinal Garden.
Can You Hike Table Mountain from Kirstenbosch?
Yes! Kirstenbosch is a starting point for several walks and hikes, including Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine, which lead towards Table Mountain. There are also shorter trails within the Kirstenbosch estate if you aren’t looking for a serious mountain hike.
For any mountain hike, check the weather, carry enough water and follow the designated routes. Cape Town’s mountain weather can change quickly, and SANBI advises visitors not to hike alone.
Where Is Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden?
Kirstenbosch is on Rhodes Drive in Newlands, Cape Town, on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, about 13 km from Cape Town’s city centre. There is free parking at Gates 1, 2 and 3. The City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off bus also stops at Kirstenbosch, making it relatively easy to combine with other Cape Town Big 6 attractions during your trip.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Kirstenbosch?
Kirstenbosch is open throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons.
Summer (September–March): 08h00–19h00
Winter (April–August): 08h00–18h00
The Conservatory is open daily from 09h00–17h00.
How Much Does Kirstenbosch Entry Cost?
Current admission prices are:
- International adults (18+): R270
- African nationals: R150
- South African & SADC residents: R110
- South African students: R60
- Children aged 6–17: R40
- Children under 6: Free
- South African seniors aged 60+: Free on Tuesdays, excluding public holidays

Kirstenbosch Events and Experiences
There’s usually more happening at Kirstenbosch than you might expect, from guided walks and bird-related activities to talks, educational programmes and special events.
Free guided garden walks are currently offered from Monday to Friday at 10:00 and 11:00, weather permitting. The walks last approximately 90 minutes and are led by volunteer guides.
In September 2026, Kirstenbosch will also host the inaugural South African Tree Symposium, bringing together conservationists, researchers, horticultural professionals, policymakers and tree enthusiasts.
Make a Day of It
One of the best things about Kirstenbosch is that you don’t have to plan every minute. Take the photos, walk the Boomslang and explore the garden. But don’t spend your entire visit looking through your phone. Kirstenbosch is one of those places where the best moments aren’t always the most obvious ones, like a bird calling from somewhere above you, an unexpected sculpture around a corner, or finding a quiet spot with Table Mountain overhead. Make sure to put your phone down occasionally, because the garden is worth experiencing in real life too.
