A unit in South African currency is called the Rand (ZAR), and it is typically fairly stable against most major international currencies. South Africa has a well-developed banking and foreign exchange network, with most major centres, including Cape Town International Airport and the V&A Waterfront, offering various locations at which to withdraw or exchange foreign currencies. As in any big city, be vigilant at cash withdrawal points. Foreign exchange transactions should only be undertaken at official and accredited locations.

There are currently two sets of bank notes in circulation in South Africa, the most recent of which bear the face of Nelson Mandela – both are considered legal tender. Current values include R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. Coins include 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, R1, R2 and R5.
