Table Mountain Aerial Cableway just turned 97, and honestly, it’s looking pretty good for its age!
Earlier this week, on 4 October, the Cableway marked 97 years since the first visitors climbed aboard and headed to the top of Table Mountain. Since that first trip in 1929, the cable car has been upgraded three times. Cape Town has changed considerably too. The view, however, has remained remarkably good at what it does.

You can see Table Mountain from just about everywhere in Cape Town, but from the top, you get to see everything else. The Atlantic, the city, Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, the coastline, and even Robben Island. All those familiar places suddenly look rather different from above.
Got a Birthday This Month?
The Cableway’s birthday may have just passed, but the birthday celebrations at Table Mountain will always continue. South Africans celebrating their birthday can get a free return Cableway ticket on any day during their birthday month. Remember to always take a valid South African ID, driver’s licence or birth certificate to the Ticket Office or Visitor Centre to claim yours.

October is a Good Month to Go Local
If your birthday isn’t in October, there is still a good reason to get up the mountain. The Local is Lekker special is back for October, with South Africans able to ride the Table Mountain Cableway for R265 per adult and R135 per child, return. Tickets are sold online only and must be purchased before the day of your visit.

It is a good month to see your own city from the top, particularly before the summer crowds really get going. Being a tourist in Cape Town doesn’t necessarily mean travelling far. Sometimes it just means looking at the city you know from somewhere completely new, so start planning your trip to Table Mountain Cableway.
Rediscover the City You Know
For 97 years, the Cableway has been taking people up Table Mountain: visitors, locals, families, school groups, birthday celebrants, first-timers and those who have probably lost count of how many times they’ve been up.

After nearly a century, the reason for going up hasn’t really changed. People want to see Cape Town from the top, spend a little time above the city and take in a view that never seems to get old. So, if it’s been a while since you played tourist in your own city, perhaps this is your sign to start with the Cape Town Big 6 Attractions.
