In addition to its stunning oak-lined avenue entrance, spectacular surrounding scenery, fine cuisine and award-winning wines, Groot Constantia Estate’s annual Summer Season experience is now renowned for its jam-packed array of things to see, do and enjoy under the warm summer sun, kissed softly by cooling Cape breezes.
Where to celebrate Summer?
Whether you’re a local or foreign wine-loving visitor to Cape Town this summer, a visit to Groot Constantia during November, December and January, is an absolute must-do outing!
Although Groot Constantia may be the oldest wine-producing farm in the country, which dates back to 1685, it’s also one of the most innovative.
The Museum, Cellar, and Vineyard Audio Tours are free of charge and available for download by anyone with a smartphone. These audio tours are part of the self-guided Visitors Route that takes you through Groot Constantia’s main attractions.
What to look forward to at Groot Constantia – The main attractions
These include the original Manor House (an Iziko Museum) and the legendary Cloete cellar, which produced the Estate’s first wines from 1791 – now a museum and tasting room that also offers a variety of yummy Chocolate and Wine Pairings for the sweet-of-toothed. After dousing yourself in all this rich and tasty history, the next stop is the modern Production Cellar, which is the departure point for the self-guided cellar and vineyard audio tours – where you can get up close and personal with the grapes that make Groot Constantia wines great!
To start your immersive Groot Constantia experience, simply download the digital Visitors Route map from the Groot Constantia website on the Experiences tab or from the QR codes placed at the Estate.
Discover the art of shopping
The Estate’s Wine and Gift shop is a unique festive celebration of all things local and showcases works inspired by Groot Constantia, from a diverse plethora of talented local South African entrepreneurs, artists, designers and craftsmen.
The shop is located in the tasting room at the main entrance gate building at Groot Constantia. It is open every day from 09h00-18h00.
Your tummy is probably rumbling by now
Exploring, tasting and enjoying can be hungry work. So why not visit one of the two first-rate eateries at the Estate?
Jonkershuis restaurant offers a complete sit-down a la carte menu and also its hugely popular picnics, which can be pre-ordered (at 24 hours notice) for any meal of the day. The restaurant also runs daily specials and will be open for Christmas Day lunch and New Year’s Eve – booking is essential.
Simon’s Restaurant offers al fresco terrace dining and is a stone’s throw from the duck pond – a favourite kiddies’ place to feed the quacky webbed of feet. Simon’s hosts live music every Wednesday and Friday evening, as well as during Sunday lunch, which is hugely popular. Also look out for Burger Night, Date Night and Seafood Night! The restaurant is open on Christmas Eve, Christmas lunch and New Year’s Day – bookings are essential.
Get a double ticket to ride…
Groot Constantia is only a 25-minute hop, skip ‘n jump from Cape Town’s city centre. So why not jump on the red double-decker, open-topped City Sightseeing bus, which will take you to the Groot Summer experience with a stunning scenic and relaxing drive and return you later to the city?
