Today, that openness is increasingly visible in how the city welcomes LGBTQ+ travellers, making a Visit Cape Town experience feel not only exciting, but genuinely affirming. From neighbourhoods and nightlife to world-class attractions, South Africa travel continues to move towards a more inclusive and representative tourism landscape.
As someone who lives here and is part of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve experienced first-hand how easy it is to navigate Cape Town attractions while feeling safe, seen and welcome. With so many things to do in Cape Town, the Cape Town Big 6 stand out as experiences that naturally reflect the city’s spirit of acceptance. Visiting during Pride Month — or the broader Month of Love in February — adds another layer of meaning, but the sense of belonging extends well beyond a single celebration.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden remains one of my most cherished Cape Town attractions. There is something deeply grounding about the way the gardens are designed — intentional, detailed and nurturing — offering a space that feels open and inclusive. As one of the world’s great botanical gardens, it invites exploration and reflection. Some of my favourite memories with my husband include long afternoons on the rolling lawns, discovering the oldest sections of the garden near the bubbling stream, and taking in the sweeping views from the Boomslang canopy walkway.
Groot Constantia
Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm, offers far more than exceptional wine and remains a highlight for LGBTQ+ travellers exploring the Cape Town Big 6. The estate invites visitors to engage with its layered history through museums, cellar tours and beautifully curated tasting rooms. Over the years, Groot Constantia has shown itself to be an inclusive attraction, hosting Pride-aligned events and welcoming diverse visitors with ease — making it a relaxed and rewarding stop on any Visit Cape Town itinerary.
V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is often where visitors first connect with the city, and it perfectly reflects Cape Town’s modern, inclusive energy. As one of the most popular things to do in Cape Town, it offers a mix of culture, dining, shopping and entertainment in a setting where LGBTQ+ travellers can feel comfortable and visible. The Waterfront sets the tone — open, vibrant and welcoming — and is also the gateway to one of the city’s most significant historical experiences.
Robben Island Museum
From the V&A Waterfront, the ferry to Robben Island Museum departs — making the journey both literal and symbolic. Visiting Robben Island is essential to understanding South Africa’s journey toward equality and human rights. The experience is sobering yet powerful, offering insight into the cost of exclusion and the strength of resilience. For LGBTQ+ travellers, it reinforces why representation, safety and acceptance matter — not only in tourism, but in society as a whole.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
The journey continues upward with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, one of the most iconic Cape Town attractions. Reaching the summit offers breathtaking views and a sense of perspective that feels deeply affirming. Table Mountain welcomes everyone, and standing above the city reminds visitors that Cape Town is built on shared space, visibility and collective experience — values that resonate strongly during Pride Month and beyond.
Cape Point
Heading further south, Cape Point delivers some of the most dramatic scenery in South Africa travel. Standing at the edge of the continent, surrounded by ocean and sky, the sense of freedom is unmistakable. The diversity of landscapes mirrors the diversity of people who visit, reminding us that there is space for every story, every identity and every way of seeing the world.
