On 29 March, in celebration of International Piano Day, Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos together with Table Mountain Cableway brought up music to the mountain for a once in a lifetime event; the handcrafted Shigeru Kawai grand piano was placed on the 12 Apostles Terrace on top of Table Mountain. Leading South African artists play piano where no one has ever played a piano before, atop South Africa’s New 7 Wonder of Nature. Artists included: Charl du Plessis, Francois du Toit, Franklin Larey, Tertia Visser Downie, Albie van Schalkwyk, Jill Richards, Bokani Dyer, Jason Revlon and Shannon Hope.
Being on the top of Table Mountain is an awe-inspiring experience
The views of the Cape Town in miniature are mesmerising and the rugged beauty of the paths and walkways twisting through rocks and shrubs are an invitation to explore more. When the weather plays along and the sky is a brilliant blue, the sun is warm and the air is so clear and fresh you can see for miles, it is almost magical. But when you hear a hint of music, and a path leads you to the Twelve Apostles Terrace where a Shigeru Kawai grand piano is being played by a maestro, the wow factor kicks in. This is Cape Town, where anything can happen and you can always expect the unexpected. The mostly unsuspecting crowds then come up the cableway by the hundreds every day were absolutely enthralled by the music. Most stopped, smiled and fumbled for cameras, video recorders and a place to sit and just listen. The views took second place as the maestros played and the sounds soared up to the heavens.
