Celebrating 111 years of magic at the iconic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden – celebrating its remarkable 111th birthday on 1 July.

Celebrating 111 Years Of Magic

There’s a magical botanical garden in Cape Town where the wonders of nature dance, sing and burst into vibrant colours that will leave you spellbound. This enchantment is none other than the iconic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, which celebrates its remarkable 111th birthday on 1 July.

Established on this day in 1913…

Established on this day in 1913, Kirstenbosch has thrived as one of Cape Town’s favourite botanical gardens, devoted to conserving and showcasing South Africa’s indigenous flora. With winter in full swing in Cape Town, there’s no better time to explore the garden’s diverse species of Fynbos that are in full bloom, filling the Fynbos Walk with colour and life. Take a stroll and feast your eyes on the proteas or sugarbushes (Protea species), pincushions (Leucospermum species), conebushes (Leucadendron species), and even rare Protea family shrubs, like the spiderheads (Serruria species).

But Kirstenbosch is not just about the flora

It’s a one-of-a-kind experience where you can also indulge in a variety of bites to eat, from the Kirstenbosch Tea Room to Moyo Restaurant and Vida e Cafè, all based within the premises of Kirstenbosch. Another must-do experience is discovering is the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, also known as “The Boomslang,” a curved steel and timber bridge that winds its way through and over the trees of the Arboretum, giving remarkable panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, garden, and Cape Flats.

Come and visit Africa’s best botanical garden

Kirstenbosch is open every day from 08h00 to 19h00 during summer (Sep-Mar) and 08h00 to 18h00 during winter (Apr-Aug). Guided tours of the garden take place from Mondays to Fridays at 10h00, 11h00, and 14h00, where expert guides will explore the different areas of the garden, highlighting the unique features of each season.
