On 11 January 2024, Table Mountain Cableway hit a remarkable milestone, welcoming its 31 millionth visitor since opening its doors in 1929. Gerda Pretorius, hailing from Bloemfontein, was the lucky soul who found herself at the centre of celebrations on that particular day. This was the first time in more than 30 years that Gerda and her husband visited Table Mountain, and little did she know, she was about to embark on a journey of surprises. While waiting in line Gerda was plucked out and acknowledged as the 31 millionth visitor. What a way to celebrate her long-awaited reunion with this majestic landmark!
Returning home: A tale of beginnings
For David Bester, Table Mountain holds a special significance that goes beyond its breathtaking vistas. At just two weeks old, David was the very first baby to travel to the top in a cable car, beginning what would become an unforgettable chapter of his life. David holds cherished memories of spending his formative months on the mountain with his parents, exploring the area’s natural beauty as a young toddler. To mark his 79th birthday, on 25 January 2023, he spent quality time with his family on the upper mountain plateau, where he once played, and his mother even served tea and sandwiches to visitors. The Shop at the Top building, now a bustling tourist hub, stands as a reminder of the treasured moments spent in his childhood home. Although photographs from those early days are scarce, the experience of revisiting Table Mountain ignited emotions and a renewed connection to his roots.
101 years young: Catherine Damons’ extraordinary birthday
Table Mountain Cableway had the honour of welcoming a truly inspiring celebration on 8 December 2023. Catherine Damons, on her momentous 101st birthday, visited Table Mountain for the first time. It was a historic occasion filled with smiles and joy as Catherine marvelled at the sweeping panoramic views and felt the cool mountain breeze on her skin.
